CONFERENCE

Short Course

The 20th WCNDT Organizing Committee invites all interested participants to attend Short Course which will be held for a day on Sunday, 26 May, the day before the 20th WCNDT.

Overview

1. Structural Health Monitoring Using Statistical Pattern Recognition

Date: Sunday, 26 May 2024

Venue: Songdo Convensia (specific room number TBA)

Instructors: Charles R. (Chuck) Farrar, Ph. D., PE & Michael Todd, Ph. D.

This program will introduce participants to the field of damage assessment (detection, location, severity) in structures as determined from changes in their measured dynamic response. In addition to the historical motivation and development of the methods, the course will cover the theory, application, and implementation of this technology. Real-world examples and results will be presented from the fields of aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering. Additionally, the application of statistical pattern recognition techniques will be emphasized throughout the course as well.

2. Welcome to the World of Digital Transformation, NDE 4.0 and Artificial Intelligence

Date: Sunday, 26 May 2024

Venue: Songdo Convensia (specific room number TBA)

Instructors: Dr. Johannes Vrana & Dr. Ripi Singh (supported by Lennart Schulenburg)

Digital transformation is one of the most misunderstood terms in recent years in addition to being a popular sales buzzword. Some people use the term in unison with Industry 4.0 and, in contrast, others see early digital calculators as their first step towards digital transformation. Part of the confusion comes from it being a long journey with an ever-changing destination and new pathways emerging all the time. All of us can only see a small fraction of the vast landscape based on our past experiences and current context and yet believe it to be the world. Based on our worldview we fall into the trap of being right albeit incomplete. This interactive course takes you on an expedition toward Digitization, Digital Transformation, Industry 4.0, NDE 4.0 and Artificial Intelligence

1. The course begins by taking a holistic view of the industrial society and demystifying frequently used terms - digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation. Those terms are discussed in the context of Industry 4.0, consumers, governance, cyber-physical perception, and emerging technologies, like artificial intelligence, internet of things, digital twins & threads, semantic interoperability, extended reality, quantum technologies, ledger technologies, and additive manufacturing. On this basis, a vision for holistic cyber-physical loops, the core for Cyber-Physical Transformation use cases, and a guideline on how to develop your roadmap for the cyber-physical transformation will be presented.

2. In this second part the course will get into several real-world examples and help you get started on your journey by performing various ideation techniques. This part will be supported by Lennart Schulenburg presenting on the application of Artificial Intelligence for radiographic inspections.

Registration fee includes the lunch, coffee and tea during session break, short course book and short course conference kit.
